What "local SEO" actually means

Most small business owners think "SEO" means "getting on Google." That is technically true but missing the important detail: there are two ways to be on Google for local searches, and they work differently.

The first is the **Google map pack**, the box of three local businesses with a map that sits near the top of most local search results. To get into the map pack you need a well-optimised Google Business Profile, citations across the right business directories, genuine reviews, and a clean local connection between your website and your GBP listing. This is what most small business customers click on, and this is where most of the monthly work focuses.

The second is the **organic listings**, the regular text links below the map pack. These are influenced more by website depth, content quality, page-level SEO, backlinks, and site authority. They matter, but for most local service searches the map pack is doing the heavy lifting.

A good local SEO programme works both surfaces at once. Most cheap agencies work neither, they sell you 'SEO' that turns out to be just running a tool against your site once a month and copy-pasting the output into a PDF.

Google Business Profile is the main lever

If you do nothing else this year, optimise your GBP. Properly. Most small businesses set it up once, never look at it again, and miss easy ranking wins. The categories you pick, the services you list, the photos you upload, the posts you publish, the questions you answer, the reviews you reply to, every one of those is a small ranking signal.

Citations: what they are, and why they matter (a bit)

A citation is just any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another website, typically business directories like Yell, Yelp, Bing Places, FreeIndex, ThomsonLocal, FSB, plus local equivalents and trade-specific directories. They tell search engines your business exists in a specific place.

Their importance is often overstated. Five well-chosen, accurate citations on directories Google actually trusts is worth more than 50 spammy directory submissions. The 'citation packages' you might have seen advertised, '200 citations for £49', are almost entirely useless and sometimes actively harmful, because they create inconsistent NAP data across the web.

On the £49 plan we build citations slowly and accurately, a few well-chosen, correct ones at a time. Quality matters more than count, but the compounding over months genuinely adds up.

Backlinks, genuine vs. spam

A backlink is another website linking to yours. Some are genuinely valuable, a local newspaper covering your business, a relevant trade association listing you, a partner business linking to you. Others are worthless or worse, directory spam, link farms, paid 'PBN' networks. Google has spent twenty years getting better at telling the difference.

Cheap SEO agencies will sell you 'backlinks' that are almost always the worthless kind. Sometimes Google will penalise your site for them. We do not buy backlinks. The monthly work includes looking for genuine local link opportunities, sponsorships, partnerships, local press, the kind of thing that earns a real link from a real local site. That is what moves the needle, and it is what cannot be faked.

AI search visibility, the new variable

Google's AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Gemini are all answering queries that used to send people to traditional search results. For local searches specifically, 'best dentist near me', 'plumber in Thirsk', the AI answers are pulling from a different set of signals than classic blue-link SEO.

What we know so far: structured data (schema markup), clear factual content on your site, a strong Google Business Profile, and genuine third-party citations all matter for AI visibility too. The good news is that proper local SEO foundations cover most of what AI search needs.

Why SEO compounds, and why it takes time

SEO is one of the few business investments where this month's work pays out in three to six months' time. That is uncomfortable for small business owners used to spending £X on Google Ads and seeing leads tomorrow. But it is also why SEO is so cost-effective once it lands: every month of work you bank stays banked, accumulating, while ads stop working the second you stop paying.

Three months in, you should start to see ranking movement on lower-competition terms. Six months in, the higher-competition terms start to move. Twelve months in, a well-run local SEO programme is typically delivering several times the enquiry volume of the starting point.

Small business owners arrive with advice from cousins, YouTube, and the last agency that sold them something. Some of it is sound. Some of it is the reason their last website did not work.

Myth 01

SEO is a one-off project I can pay for once.

A site can be set up well from day one, and we do that as part of every new build. But ongoing ranking is ongoing work. Competitors update their sites, Google updates its algorithm, your reviews change, citations decay, the local landscape shifts. SEO is a small monthly job, not a one-off job. Anyone selling it as a one-off is selling you the start of the work, not the work itself.

Myth 02

I need page-1 rankings within a month.

Not realistic, except occasionally for very low-competition keywords. Real local SEO movement happens between months three and six. If someone promises page 1 in 30 days, they are either targeting keywords nobody searches or planning to use techniques Google will eventually penalise you for. Both end badly.

Myth 03

More keywords = more traffic.

Targeting 500 keywords usually means ranking decently for none of them. Targeting 25 well-chosen, commercially valuable keywords usually means owning page 1 for several of them. Focused local SEO outperforms scattergun every time, which is why the monthly work targets a tight, genuinely valuable keyword set rather than a sprawling one.

Myth 04

I just need a few backlinks from anywhere.

Bad backlinks can hurt more than no backlinks. The era of 'submit your site to 1,000 directories for £30' is genuinely over, Google has been algorithmically discounting and penalising those for a decade. Five genuine links from relevant local sites outperform 500 directory listings. We focus on the genuine ones.

Myth 05

AI search means SEO is finished.

It is changing, not finished. Local search via AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews) is pulling from largely the same signals as classic local SEO, a strong GBP, structured data, genuine citations, factual content. Businesses that have done their local SEO foundations properly are showing up in AI answers; businesses that haven't, aren't. SEO is more important now, not less.

Myth 06

Just getting more Google reviews will fix everything.

Reviews matter (a lot, they are one of the top ranking signals for the map pack), but they are part of a system. A business with 50 five-star reviews, no citations, no GBP optimisation, and a slow website still loses to a competitor with 20 reviews who has done the other work. Reviews are necessary but not sufficient. Get the reviews, and do the rest.

A real example

Beaten by a Squarespace template

A small accountancy firm in Helmsley came to us last spring. Established 12 years, six staff, several hundred clients, properly accredited, genuinely good at the work. Their website had been built by a developer friend three years earlier, clean enough, fast enough, well-written.

When we ran a competitive audit, we found the firm beating them in the local map pack was a one-person accountancy operation, run out of a kitchen table in a nearby village, with a Squarespace template and 11 reviews. The established firm had no Google Business Profile review work, no citations beyond their original Companies House listing, no schema markup on the site, and no local content beyond a single 'about us' page.
