Twelve years of building small-business websites has produced a short list of strong opinions. Here are the ones that shape this work.

What a small business website actually needs to do

Most agency-led web-design conversations start with what the site should look like. That is the wrong starting point. A small business website needs to do four things, in roughly this order: explain what you do, prove you are credible, make it obvious where you work, and tell the visitor how to get in touch.

Everything else, the hero animation, the parallax scroll, the gradient backgrounds, the inspirational stock photography, is decoration. Useful sometimes, harmful when it gets in the way of the four jobs above. Most small business sites that "look beautiful" but generate no enquiries fail because they look beautiful at the cost of being usable.

We start every project with the four jobs above and build out from there. Decoration earns its place by helping the visitor do one of those four things faster, not by impressing other designers on Dribbble.

Mobile-first is not optional anymore

Roughly 65% of small business website traffic now comes from mobile devices, and for trades and local services it is usually higher. When someone googles "emergency electrician Helmsley" at 9pm on a Tuesday, they are doing it on a phone. If your site loads slowly on that phone, or the contact button is buried below a slideshow they cannot dismiss, they will be on your competitor's site within ten seconds.

We design the mobile version of every page first, then adapt it for desktop. That is the opposite of how most agencies still work, and it shows in their results. A site that was designed for a 27-inch monitor first and "made responsive" afterwards is almost always a worse mobile experience than a site that was designed for a 5-inch screen from the start.

You do not need twenty pages

A common mistake among small businesses ordering their first website is over-scoping the page count. "We want a homepage, about us, our story, our values, our team, our process, our services, services 1 to 6 on separate pages, our locations on separate pages, testimonials, gallery, a blog, FAQ..." That is twenty pages, half of which will never be visited, all of which dilute the focus of the site.

Most small businesses need somewhere between five and eight good pages. We agree the page count in the brief, based on what your business actually needs to explain, not on a tier you have been sold. A focused five-page site that explains one thing well will outperform a twenty-page site that explains five things badly, both for visitors and for Google. Less is more, when the less is well-chosen.

If you genuinely need more, we will tell you. Multi-service businesses with five or six distinct service lines sometimes need real service pages for each. But the default assumption is that you need fewer pages than you think.

Local SEO is not a separate phase

We build local SEO foundations into every site at launch, not because it costs extra, but because doing it later costs more. That means: page titles and meta descriptions written to match how customers actually search, Google Business Profile aligned with what the site says, NAP (name, address, phone) consistent across the site and your GBP listing, schema markup for local business and service pages, and the site submitted to Search Console properly.

This is not the same thing as the active monthly local SEO work on the £49 Local SEO plan. It is the foundation that work builds on. Every site we launch gets the foundations whichever plan you are on; the £49 plan is what keeps adding to them month after month.

Fast and clean, by default

We build with modern static-site tools (Astro, in case you are technical and curious). A static site is essentially a folder of pre-built HTML files served straight from a global CDN, no database lookup, no PHP runtime, no plugin chain. That makes them genuinely fast (1-2 seconds to first paint on a mobile connection), genuinely cheap to run (which is why hosting is simply included in your plan, with nothing extra to think about), and genuinely secure (there is no admin panel to hack into).

You do not need to care about any of that. You will care about the visible result: pages that load instantly, a site that does not break when you forget to update something, and a Google PageSpeed score that does not give your prospects a reason to bounce.

Myths we push back on.

Small business owners arrive with advice from cousins, YouTube, and the last agency that sold them something. Some of it is sound. Some of it is the reason their last website did not work.

Myth 01

I need a logo before I can have a website.

No. We have launched plenty of perfectly good sites with the business name set in a clean typeface instead of a logo. If you have a logo, great. If you do not, we will use the business name well, and you can commission a logo later without rebuilding the site. Do not let logo procrastination stop you launching a working website.

Myth 02

A drag-and-drop builder will save me money.

Squarespace and Wix sell themselves as the budget option. Most small businesses on one of them pay £180 to £300 a year and never rank for the searches that matter. Myth 03

A bigger site looks more professional.

A site that is the right size for your business looks more professional. A five-page site for a sole trader, well-written and fast, signals 'this is a real business that knows what it is.' A twenty-page site stuffed with thin content signals 'this person hired their nephew.' Page count is not a credibility signal, clarity is.

Myth 04

I can update everything myself with the right CMS.

Most owners do not. Of the small business owners we have built sites for, roughly one in fifteen genuinely updates the site themselves. The other fourteen meant to, never quite found the time, and then quietly stopped trying. Your monthly plan covers the edits, handled by us, usually faster than you doing it yourself, and already included rather than billed as an extra.

Myth 05

I'll need to redesign in a year or two.

A well-built site lasts five years easily. Redesign culture is mostly an agency invention, they need you to redesign because that is how they sell new projects. We build sites that age well: clean typography, restrained design, focused content. Your monthly plan handles the small ongoing updates, so the redesign genuinely is not needed for a long time.

Myth 06

My business is too small for a real website.

If you have customers, you have a business. If customers might google you, you need a website. The bar for 'real website' is not '£3,000 from an agency in Leeds', the bar is 'clear, fast, mobile-friendly, easy to contact, on Google.' With no upfront cost and a plan from £29 a month, that bar is genuinely within reach.

A real example

From Fiverr to first page

A small electrician business in Ryedale approached us last year with a Fiverr site he'd paid £130 for two years earlier. It existed. It was on Google somewhere on page four. The homepage opened with the line 'Welcome to our website' and a stock photo of a bulb. The contact form did not submit. The phone number was missing from every page below the fold.

We rebuilt it properly, five pages, structured around the services he actually offers (rewires, EV charger installs, fault-finding, lighting design, periodic inspections), each with location-aware copy and clear contact buttons. The Google Business Profile was aligned with the new site at launch. No upfront cost, the build included in his monthly plan.

Eight weeks later he was on the first page of the local map pack for 'electrician [town]' searches across three nearby towns. Enquiries roughly tripled over the same period the previous year. The site is on the £49 Local SEO plan, so the work compounds.

How long does a small business website take?

Most small business websites take two to four weeks once we have your content and photos. A very simple site can be faster; a larger one with copywriting takes a little longer. If you are organised about getting content over, faster. If you take a month to send the photos, longer. We agree the timescale in writing before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

How does the no-upfront-cost model work?

There is no build fee and no setup fee. We design and build your website, and it is included in a simple monthly plan: Essentials at £29/month, or Local SEO at £49/month. Both are 12-month plans with hosting, business email, security and support included, and you own your website outright from launch. It works like a phone contract: nothing to pay upfront, a clear monthly price, a set term. The difference is that you own the site, so you are never locked in the way a rented website locks you in.

Can you write the copy?

Yes. We shape the page strategy so the site reads clearly and ranks for the right searches, and where you want it, we draft the copy from a short interview with you, you answer a handful of questions, we write the pages, you approve. Either way, the words have to sound like you. Generic AI-generated waffle does not rank and customers can usually tell.

Do you use templates?

We use proven patterns to keep the work efficient, the visual rhythm, the section structures, the page-flow choices, but the pages, copy, and design decisions are shaped around your specific business. You will not end up on a site that looks identical to a hundred other businesses in your sector. That is the difference between using patterns and using a template.

Will I be able to edit the site myself?

By design, no, and that is usually a feature, not a limitation. A site you cannot accidentally break is a site that stays looking good. Your monthly plan includes the edits, handled by us, which is typically simpler and faster than the owner doing it themselves. Send the change, it gets done.

What if I want to add more pages later?

Easy, additional pages are quoted at the time, always before any work happens, so there are no surprises. Small content updates within your plan are included; a genuinely new page or section is quoted clearly and only goes ahead with your written approval of the price.

I already have a website. Can you rebuild it?

Yes, about half of our work is rebuilds rather than new launches. We audit what you have, identify what is worth keeping (URLs, content, ranking history) and what needs starting fresh, then rebuild with the existing strengths preserved, on the same no-upfront-cost monthly plan. The takeover review is free if you are seriously considering a rebuild.

How does this compare to Squarespace or Wix?

Honestly: better for SEO, faster, more flexible, and built around your business rather than a template. The annual cost of a Squarespace business plan is roughly the same as the £29 Essentials plan here, and Squarespace's SEO ceiling is genuinely lower. The trade-off is that you do not get the drag-and-drop editor, and for the reasons in our myths section, that is rarely a real loss.

Do you do branding or logos?

Not as a primary service. We can recommend small studios in Yorkshire who do branding well, and we work with whatever brand assets you have (or do not have, see the myths section on logos). If you want a logo designed alongside the site, we can quote it separately and clearly before any work starts.

Do I really own the website?

Yes. The code, the content, and the domain are in your name from launch. The build was included in your plan at no upfront cost; it is not a debt and it is not held over you. If you ever decide to leave after the 12-month plan, you keep your website, we export the files and help you move it elsewhere. That is the bright line between this and a rented website.
